Windows 10 Apps Let Users Protect Against Malware

Microsoft has added new technology to Windows 10 apps which use the virus present in the system to protect users from malware. These involve any security solution and not just Microsoft. According to Microsoft can help application developers as a new way to protect users from dynamic script-based malware and special attack vectors.

The solution that Microsoft has coined the Antimalware scanning interface (AMSI). This is an interface standard that allows applications and services can integrate with any installed security program. It is primarily intended for difficult to detect script malware. However, Microsoft looks beyond "scripting engines" as PowerShell, which require the virus to control specific code.

It is also considered communications apps inspecting messages for malware before they are presented to the user or games that monitor plug-ins to install. It will happen in a way that users do not need to do. In this way, malware that tries to hide and use built-in Windows scripting hosts will be inspected on a much deeper level, which should provide additional protection.

Malware Destroys MBR Hard Disk During Analysis

It is known that malware creators do all sorts of tricks to analysis to prevent their creation but a new one does go very far and "destroy" the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the hard disk, so the computer will not boot. Let researchers know Cisco.

The MBR contains information about the type and location of logical partitions on the hard drive. It is essential for the computer to be able to start. The now discovered Rombertik-malware focuses on the MBR in the case of analysis. The malware spreads via email attachments and poses as a PDF file. In reality it is a SCR file the malware.

Once users open the attachment Rombertik first check whether it is running in a sandbox. Sandboxes are often used by researchers to analyze malware and is regularly checks for malware on the presence of this type of analysis environments. In case there is no sandbox is found, the installation continues. Rombertik is designed to steal passwords from browsers.

Before it does this is a final check there is still carried out in order to check that the malware is not analyzed via the memory. If this check fails to Rombertik strikes and destroys the MBR and overwrites partitions with "null byte", so recovering data from these partitions is difficult. The MBR is further adjusted so that the computer enters an infinite reboot loop. If the malware does not have permissions to overwrite the MBR will overwrite all the user's files in the home directory and encrypt.

Research: Cyber Spies Sloppy Programmers

Groups that advanced persistent threats (APTS) for cyber espionage prove to be sloppy programmers use, says a researcher ( pdf ) of the British anti-virus firm Sophos . The virus fighter compared the malware cybercriminals applied by cyber spies.

Apts are often considered sophisticated attacks, in which attackers long time to access the network from a target managed to obtain. However, the quality of the malware used appears to be disappointing, says researcher Gabor Szappanos. For example, there appeared to be no quality control in the APT-groups. "A big part of their creations is not well tested, and they do not see why some functionality is not working," he tells.

It also appears that ordinary malware writers have more knowledge than the known exploits APT groups. Something which is bad news, because APT groups focusing on specific targets, while the malware from the malware writers has a much greater range. The APT groups do not have extensive skills when it comes to exploits. New exploits are quickly utilized, but it comes to units which have been developed by others or come from Metasploit.

Usually they develop exploits yourself and in the case of other people's exploits are barely changed. Metasploit is a framework that is offered by security firm Rapid7 and allows security professionals to test the security of systems. According Szappanos let his research shows that when security researchers and administrators respond rapidly to undetected leaks, they probably handle this type of APT groups.

"Despite this, the malware writers mentioned in the report should not be underestimated. They develop sophisticated Trojans and know that spread to major organizations. The fact that they are not good with exploits does not mean that they are less dangerous," concludes the researcher.
