Video Ads On Popular Sites Spread Malware

Caption: Process flow for video-borne malware infection

The use of advertising to spread malware takes place for some time, but cyber criminals also convert video advertisements. Recently appeared on 3000 websites, including many in the Alexa Top 100 most visited websites, a malicious video ad, reports Media Trust.

The ad showed a pop-up in which a rogue security was offered, for example, Apple Safari. When users clicked on the pop-up was actually downloaded malware. The incident took place on 29 October and the infected ads were distributed 12 hours.According to Media Trust is the use of video ads attractive to cyber criminals because they are much harder to control. The use of such advertisements would therefore be on the increase.

Chrysler Raises 1.4 Million Cars Back Because Of Vulnerability

Carmaker Chrysler raises some 1.4 million cars and trucks back because of a vulnerability in the software that allow attackers over the internet can access the vehicles. It is then possible to switch on the brakes, to turn off and to turn off the motor at low speeds.

The vulnerability was by researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek discovered . The problem is in Uconnect, a component that gives the cars online capabilities and that the entertainment and navigation are operable. The functionality even offers a wifi hotspot and makes phone calls possible. Uconnect allows anyone with a vehicle connection as long as the IP address of the car is known.

After the connection was made with a car, the researchers succeeded in order to adapt the firmware of the system. This custom firmware can then send instructions via the internal network of the car to the physical components such as the engine and the wheels.

Recall

After Chrysler nine months ago was informed, was the manufacturer on July 16 with a security update . The update must be installed via a USB stick by car owners. The fear was that many owners would not do this. Therefore Chrysler now launched a voluntary recall, let the manufacturer through their own website to know. It is about 1.4 million vehicles. According to Chrysler there are no attacks still in the "wild" that have been observed using the vulnerability.

The problem is present in the MY Dodge Viper and different models of RAM pickup, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs, Dodge Durango SUVs, different My Chrysler and Dodge Charger sedans and Dodge Challenger sports coupe.Customers of an affected vehicle will have received a USB device that they can use to upgrade the car software. The upgrade not only resolves the vulnerability, but also adds additional security measures, according to Chrysler.

Symantec Confirms Firmware Flaw In Mac Computers

Symantec has confirmed that there is indeed a vulnerability in the firmware of most Mac computers exists that an attacker could install a rootkit to gain persistent root access to the computer. This week, researcher Pedro Vilaca revealed the vulnerability of the EFI firmware.

The problem, which is not present in the latest models of Apple, occurs when the computer wakes from its hibernation, allowing a user to access the firmware. The vulnerability can be used both locally and over the internet. For this last attack, however, would an attacker must have a second vulnerability that provides root access. "Although these vulnerabilities is not widespread, they come from time to time or for", says Symantec .

The anti-virus company says that it is a critical vulnerability, as it may give an attacker root access persistent even erasing the hard drive or it can survive reinstallation of the operating system. Symantec notes that no attacks have been observed in the wild yet, but warns that the risk of seizures increases as the news about the leak from spreading.

Until an update is available, users who think risking the advice to use their computer completely off instead of sleep mode. In addition, it is advisable to keep all the software completely up-to-date, since there is a second leak is necessary in order to attack the vulnerability firmware over the internet. The vulnerability has been confirmed in the Mac Mini 5.1, MacBook Pro 8.2, 9.1 and 9.2, 10.1 Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air 5.1. MacBook Pro and MacBook Air 11.3 6.2 would not be vulnerable.

Leak In Older MacBooks Makes Installation Possible Rootkit

A security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in the firmware of several older Apple MacBooks, allowing an attacker could install malware. The latest models do not seem to be vulnerable, but 100% sure researcher Pedro Vilaca not, he tells on his blog.

Vilaca discovered that he is the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) can adjust from "userland". UEFI is the successor to the BIOS and a new model for the interface between the computer's operating system and the platform firmware. The UEFI code should normally be inaccessible to users but the researcher discovered that the code is accessible after a computer is restarted and is in sleep mode.

The problem is in MacBooks for mid-2014 and is mounted on a MacBook Pro Retina MacBook Pro 8.2 and a MacBook Air.Through the vulnerability it is possible to install a rootkit. An attacker does not even have a physical access, since the leak via Safari or attack another attack vector distance is.

The researcher thought that Apple knew of the problem, but that turns out not to be so. So it is a zero-day vulnerability for which no security update Apple has released. Users also are advised to completely turn off their computers and not to put into sleep mode. Vilaca further advises to mail Apple asking for a firmware update.

Xtube Porn Spreading Malware Via Flash Attack

Visitors to the porn xtube are now warned cyber criminals have hacked the website and use it for distributing malware. Xtube 780 ranked of most visited websites in the United States and would have to deal with 25 million visitors every month.

Unlike other recent attacks are widely used in the case of infectious xtube no ads, but the attackers have malicious code placed directly on the website itself. Something which is possible only if the attackers have access to the website. The code sends users unnoticed through to another website which then tries to put through a known vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player malware on the computer.

It is a vulnerability that already has a security update has been released. Users who have the latest Flash Player version available are therefore not at risk. In case the attack was successfully placed a Trojan horse on the computer. The malware was detected at the time of the attack by 12 of the 57 scanners on VirusTotal, says anti-virus company Malwarebytes .

It is not just porn sites that are victims of these attacks. This week, the Dutch security researcher warned Yonathan Klijnsma that the website nummeriban.nl where users can convert to an IBAN account number, also malicious code was detected. The malicious code sent by visitors to a website that users via known vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player, Java and Adobe Reader tried to attack.

Latest Flash Attack Is Part Of Botnet Computers

A new vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player cybercriminals actively use to infect computers with malware and for which no security update is available is the ultimate goal of creating a botnet that among other things used for committing click fraud.

The zero-day vulnerability in Flash Player was wednesday afternoon reported by security researcher 'JuK. Visiting a malicious or hacked website with the latest version of Flash Player would be enough to get infected. The researcher also advised to temporarily disable Flash Player. Adobe will facing the business magazine Forbes that examines the message, but still has not announced any details.

Meanwhile, security Malwarebytes malware examined using the new Flash Player attack is installed on computers. In case the attack is successful, the computer part of the Bedep botnet. This botnet can then, by installing additional malware, use the computer for different purposes. In the case of the malware that saw the researchers concerned the click fraud.

The malware infects the explorer.exe process and let the infected computers to send any requests for ad networks, without the user does this by. According to researcher Jerome Segura are difficult to distinguish them from real traffic requests, allowing advertisers end up paying for impressions and clicks that do not originate from a human and which benefit cybercriminals.
